MUSC – Clinical Science Building Ninth Floor Laboratory Renovations, MUSC
Location: Charleston, SC
Completion Date: 2015
Total Construction Cost: $6,971,700
The renovation of the 9th floor in MUSC’s Clinical Sciences Building transformed the outdated laboratory and office space into a modern laboratory facility which will allow the College of Medicine greater flexibility in their recruitment efforts for years to come. The 29,345 square foot space now hosts three large modular laboratory spaces, a new vivarium space, conference and meeting rooms, equipment rooms and supporting office space for the College of Medicine staff.
The new lighting systems were designed to meet the specific lighting level requirements defined by the College of Medicine while conforming to national energy efficiency standards. The existing electrical infrastructure was upgraded to support increased electrical load and both normal power and emergency power were provided to suit the needs of the researchers and office staff. Emergency power was a vital piece of this project to ensure that the researchers’ work was safe from potential power failures and outages caused by interruptions within the power grid or a weather event such as a hurricane. This project was a large undertaking for the College of Medicine but with cooperation from a skilled set of contractors and an engaged design team, we were able to provide MUSC and the College of Medicine with a flexible and functional space to serve their researchers today as well as into the future.
