AVX MANUFACTURING FACILITY EXPANSION

Location: Fountain Inn, SC
Completion Date: 2015
Total Investment: $35,000,000

AVX Corporation, headquartered in Fountain Inn, SC, is an international manufacturer and provider of electronic components. As part of a consolidation of US plants, the Fountain Inn facility is being expanded and upfitted as part of a $35 million dollar investment by the company. The existing manufacturing facility was used for many years as a toner production facility, so the conversion to an electronic semiconductor facility involved substantial planning, including special consideration for phasing to accommodate production as well as available funding.

GWA’s work with this project began with master planning concepts for the expansion. Multiple electrical options for converting the existing pneumatic-process driven facility to an electrical-process intensive facility where developed and evaluated. This included close coordination with the local utility, Duke Power, and with AVX engineering to determine a plan of action for a phased buildout of the facility - accommodating equipment delivery, project funding and production schedules.

The electrical systems were designed with process-specific energy metering and logging to allow for managing electrical usage and costs. Our work also included new energy efficient LED lighting and automatic controls; power distribution including power connections to manufacturing equipment; infrastructure for instrumentation, data and controls; addressable fire alarm system and grounding systems.
